Reflections on the 2009 HEBA Leaders Quiet Day ![]() Even though it’s now a few years since I read Eugene Peterson’s classic book The Contemplative Pastor, I still remember one phrase which keeps coming back to me: ‘Busyness is laziness.’ Though I’m not sure I agree entirely with the way he stretches his point to make it, I recognise the value of what he is saying. For all of us engaged in ministry, the battle to create space and stillness, to give priority to prayer and reflection, is a constant one. There is always some task or some person demanding our immediate attention. That’s why I find enormous value in events like the HEBA Quiet Day, an opportunity to take time away from routine schedules and demands. This year’s Quiet Day was led by Alan Pain and Naomi Sharp from BMS World Mission’s International Mission Centre. After opening worship, Alan led us through a reflection on the honest and frank ‘confessions of Jeremiah,’ which help give voice to the challenges and frustrations of ministry. Following lunch, Naomi creatively reflected on the story of Mary and Martha, inviting us to consider what we could learn through the story about our own relationships with God and family members. In between these sessions, there were opportunities for group discussion and the chance to venture outside and enjoy Warwick’s unique ‘four-seasons-in-one-day’ weather! Our warm thanks go to Alan and Naomi, and to Peter Burns and his team at Castle Hill Baptist Church, who serve us in providing this event each year.
