If you didn’t already know this, our God is a God of surprises! If you had told me earlier in the year that after having retired to Evesham, Worcs and then 6 years later moved to Birmingham that I would be in post as the Treasurer of HEBA I would have laughed all of the way to the bank!
If you had told me that I would be able to use my God given skills and experience gained in both the world of Church and the secular world, not that there is a separation of the two as far as I am concerned, I would have laughed all of the way to the pulpit!
If you had told me that I would have the opportunity to assist in the wonderful work of the Heart of England Baptist Association and be in a position where I could be an encouragement to the Regional Ministers and staff of HEBA and the ministers and members of over 170 churches. I would have laughed all the way to Didcot!
Impossible things become possible through the work of our amazing God. I know! I have seen Him at work. Especially as a lay pastor in Croydon, South London. A church with just 19 members and meeting in a school when I was first called, grew and over a 5 year period, working in unity with our local Anglican Church and people who lived on a council estate, we built a £250K Church & Community Centre. This for the use of the local community and the church.
I have only been in post for about 3 months but I have already become aware of some wonderful initiatives that are taking place in our area. Ministers and people open to God for new ways of making him known or for the consolidation of work already taking place.
Let me encourage you to seek God’s Kingdom first in all that you do. That’s what I would like to be able to do in this position of service to which God has called me. Seek His Kingdom and serve in partnership with all God’s people. He is so generous. He has already given us the resources we need both in terms of gifts and money. What we need to do is to seek them out and to discern how He wants them to be used.
As we near the end of another year let’s be generous in the use of those gifts. Maybe we could give for the first time, or increase our giving to the work of Home Mission, a work that supports so many ministries. Maybe we could send a gift to the HEBA Benevolent Fund at the HEBA office so that as God’s family we could support ministers and their families in time of need. Wouldn’t that be a marvellous thing to do as a way of thanking God for his faithfulness to us during this past year.
I have no doubt whatsoever that in the year 2017 God will surprise us and bless us again as we seek to serve Him together and to use the skills, experience and resources that He has given us.
I am looking forward to being a part of that. I hope that you will be too.
‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths’. Prov 3:5-6.
